I feel the all the hype around Opus One is due to the fact that it has become a brand more than a wine, like Louis Vuitton or Gucci. You have the same or maybe better quality with the half-priced Chadwick from Errazuriz. This is a good wine, a very good wine, and will improve with age, but I want to be very frank: it costs way too much.
The tannins need still some time, but they will eventually show their class. Opus one harvested relatively early (end of september) and managed to avoid the October heat wave, producing quite an elegant styled wine (which bears anyway the California mark in the aromas and mouthfeel). Over the last year I have drank numerous wines, each costing a fraction of this one, which easily out-performed this bottle. The wine's texture showed that it was technically well made, but the cool vintage's problems showed through. Licorice and green pepper composed the long finish which was initially chalky. In the mouth, the wine was silky, but the red fruit was lean, thin, and greenish. The nose promised more than the palate delivered. To me the nose was reminiscent of a well-made but off-year St. On the nose: aromas of red fruits, cocoa, and green pepper predominated.
